Basics of Interior Design

Although there are some differences between the roles of a home stager and an interior designer, both should be well-educated on the basics of interior design. They need to know how to use various design elements that can pull a space together for its intended purpose. An interior designer is trained to communicate the owner’s individuality and uniqueness through his/her home decor. A home stager neutralizes the home so that it has a broad buyer appeal while still accomplishing the same home feeling. Let’s chat about some of these interior design basics that make up the foundation for every design project.

Color Palettes

A color palette is a meticulous and well-thought-out selection of colors. This is one of the first things a designer chooses when planning a client’s space. The color palette sets the tone and direction for the rest of the project and captures the space aesthetic. The color palette may vary from a neutral, earthy atmosphere to a vibrant, bold setting that runs across every item in the design plan. Once a designer chooses a color palette, this sets the pace for the mood and functionality of the rest of the living space.

Harmony

In interior design, harmony is referred to as the appealing arrangement of design elements that come together to create a cohesive feel. When a designer is choosing paint colors, flooring, large furniture, and accessory pieces, it is important to choose items that are in harmony with each other. A well-designed space should have a harmonious flow from one side of the room to the other.

Balance

Balance is a design term used to describe how a space is stabilized visually. Balance in interior design ensures that no single element in a room overpowers another, in terms of visual weight. Everything should be in proportion. Interior designers choose items that will both unify the space and balance the room visually. This step requires expertise from professional interior designers to ensure that one corner of the room does not look visually out of balance with the other.

Style

Style is the ability to create an interior flow within the home. In today’s realm of interior design, experts may mix and match styles to meet client tastes and needs. When mixing styles, interior designers often follow the 80/20 rule. Normally when choosing a style that reflects the client’s uniqueness, interior designers will choose an overarching design style (80) and one to two supporting styles (20) that are used in the accessories and soft goods.

Space Planning

Space planning refers to organizing the space, furniture, and functions in a way that produces a smooth living experience. This step is important as it hinges on the functionality of the space for the design client. Every designer knows that if the space is not functional then the design does not work. This interior design basic hinges on traffic flow and the everyday needs of the design client.

From balance to color palettes to harmony, home stagers and interior designers need to become experts in these areas to create warm and inviting spaces for clients. Each of these parts of interior design forms the foundation for a well-designed home. Whether the audience is potential buyers or homeowners, experts in staging and design are well-educated on these elements of interior design in order to create beautiful, functional spaces for their clients and give quality to their prospective industries.
