As an interior designer, one of the most rewarding aspects of my job is sourcing the perfect materials and furnishings for my clients. Whether you’re building your home from scratch or refreshing your living space with new décor, having a designer on board can make the entire process smoother, more cohesive, and enjoyable. With so many choices available in terms of style, size, materials, price points, and lead times, it can be overwhelming to narrow down the best options. That’s where I come in. I use a carefully considered six-point checklist to ensure that every piece I select fits your vision and your space perfectly, without sacrificing function or aesthetic.
Does this piece go with the overall aesthetic we are going for?
The first thing I assess when sourcing materials or furnishings is STYLE. Every client has a unique design preference, whether it’s modern, rustic, traditional, or a combination of styles. My goal is to identify pieces that complement the overall theme and feel of your home. For instance, if you love mid-century modern, I’ll be on the lookout for sleek, clean lines and organic shapes. If a more industrial look resonates with you, I’ll focus on finding pieces that incorporate raw materials like metal and exposed wood. It’s all about curating a selection that aligns with your taste, creating harmony and flow in the space.
Are the dimensions appropriate? Will it Work?
Next on my checklist is SIZE. It’s crucial that everything fits comfortably in the room without feeling cramped or leaving too much negative space. This is why accurate measurements and understanding of the layout are essential before making any purchase. Whether it’s a large sectional for your living room or a small accent table for a reading nook, ensuring the right proportions is key to creating balance and functionality in the space. I always work with floor plans and mock-ups to visualize how pieces will sit together.
Are the materials appropriate for the application?
MATERIALS are another major factor in sourcing. Not only do the materials affect the look of a piece, but they also impact its durability and functionality. For example, if you have young children or pets, I might suggest performance fabrics for sofas and chairs—something stain-resistant and easy to clean. Alternatively, for a more luxurious feel, we might opt for velvet or leather. I also take into account environmental factors, such as the need for sustainable or eco-friendly materials, which is increasingly important for many clients. I pay close attention to the quality of craftsmanship to ensure that each piece will last and maintain its beauty over time.
Does it work with the surrounding items/finishes?
Understanding the CONTEXT of how a piece will be used is essential as well. This means not only thinking about how a piece looks but how it will function in your daily life. A dining table, for instance, might need to accommodate large family dinners or gatherings, while also offering the right style to match the surrounding décor. The context might also be about location—what works well for a coastal home may not be ideal for an urban loft. I’m always thinking about how each item will be used in the real world, ensuring that style never compromises practicality.
Does this work within the budget?
Another major consideration is PRICE. I work with a “good, better, best” pricing structure, which allows me to offer a range of options that fit your budget without compromising on quality. It's important to me that clients feel they are getting the best value for their investment. From more affordable retail selections to higher-end, custom pieces, I take your budget into account and carefully source options that strike a balance between cost and design integrity. Sourcing within budgetary constraints is part of the art of design—finding that perfect mix of affordability and beauty.
How long will it take? Is it worth the wait?
Finally, I always factor in LEAD TIME. Custom or high-quality furniture often has a longer lead time due to production schedules and shipping. While that beautifully crafted sofa or handmade dining table might be exactly what you’re envisioning, it’s important to plan for potential delays and make adjustments to the timeline as needed. I make sure clients are aware of lead times upfront and manage expectations to avoid any last-minute surprises. With so many variables in furniture production and delivery, timing is just as important as the other factors on this checklist.
Hiring an interior designer gives you access to a world of resources and expertise that’s hard to navigate on your own. From choosing the right materials and furniture to managing logistics like price and lead time, my role is to guide you through the process with ease and confidence. When everything comes together—the style, the size, the materials, and the practical details—you’ll have a home that feels not only beautiful but truly yours. Ultimately, my goal is to make your vision a reality, all while saving you time, energy, and avoiding costly mistakes.
